ALS: Als or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a neurodegenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurons. There is no known cause and no known cure. Fortunately, only 10% of all ALS cases have a family history. The cases are transmitted in an autosomal dominant fashion and the defect is on chromosome 21.

Very remote chance: ALS thankfully is a rare disease. It is very infrequently associated with genetic risk, and based on your description, likely your grandfather had a sporadic case. Thus, the odds of your acquiring the disease is very minimal at most.
