Impaired: Normal fasting glu is 100 or less. Diabetes is 126 or higher. Impaired glu tolerance is another term that is based on a glucose tolerance test. In both of these conditions, there is a high chance of progressing to diabetes, 50% over 5 yr in some studies. Often there is a family history, obesity, hypertension, and abnormal lipids. Weight loss, exercise is the best preventive.

Likely so.: The term "Prediabetic" is used to define a group of individuals who are more likely to become diabetic compared to the general population. Prediabetics are identified by blood testing. It's not a guarantee that you'll become diabetic, but an increased likelihood, especially if you're not diligent with your diet and exercise.
