Back to your dentist: To find out why. This is definitely not normal. Lots of possible reasons why. Your own dentist should be able to tell you why and how to resolve this issue. If not, see ( another) endodontist for a consultation. Consider a cbct (3d image) scan if cause is a mystery.

Your dentist...: If you have not yet done so please call the dentist who performed your treatment. This dentist knows the particulars of your tooth and can thus manage your pain best. This experience you are having is not rare but it is not the norm. Perhaps the bite on the tooth needs to be adjusted, perhaps you need another antibiotic, perhaps something is leaking, perhaps you had a difficult situation....

Unclear question: I'm not sure if you are asking if root canal will stop pain in a tooth that has hurt for 8 weeks or if you are asking if a tooth treated with root canal should hurt after 8 weeks. Pain in teeth that is caused by an infection of the root canal system should ease after the treatment. A tooth that has been in pain for 8 weeks due to a root canal infection should quickly respond to treatment.

Root canal pain: This is not normal. I would call your dentist for a follow up. You could have a root fracture, missed canal, etc. the point is call your dentist for a follow up and have them take a look at your tooth. Don't keep living in pain.

Re-evaluation: The tooth needs to be re-evaluated by the treating dentist. There may be a residual infection or a root fracture. Feel better soon...

See endodontist: Bone may still have an infection, or tooth may be fractured... Can't tell without an exam and a radiograph. Feel better soon...

Is it finished?: We need to determine the source of the pain. It is possible that the pain is coming from the nerve where accessory or additional canals may have been hard to locate an clean. It is also possible this is coming from the ligament where a crack or high filling or crown maybe irritating the tooth. Post op pain can last this long, but it is rare. Have the dentist reevaluate the tooth.

Re-evaluate tooth: It could be from many things, including but not limited to a failed rct, bite problem, fractured tooth, gum problem, adjacent tooth, recurrent infection, etc. You should return to your dentist and have the tooth re-evaluated and treated accordingly.

Call your dentist: Endodontic pain goes away once the nerve and/infection is resolved. You need to find out why your pain has not gone away immediately.
