One or the other: You have at least two possibilities. One is that the root canal is infected. The second is that your crown may need to be adjusted. There could be a periodontal component as well. After 5 months you should not be uncomfortable. Your dentist will need to re-examine that tooth and figure out what is bothering you.

Pain from root canal: Is it uncomfortable to chewing, if so the crown might occlusal adjustment, if the pain is unsolicited , the tooth might have 4 canals that was missed, or the canals are not cleaned out properly . Is the root canal done by a specialists or gp. My advice go back and have your dentists look at it.No one can tell you if the root canal was successful without exam and xrays, .

See Endodontist: There are many causes for a root canal to be sensitive after several months. Was the root canal performed by a specialist? A detailed exam by a microscopically trained endodontist is the best way to go. That being said, even perfectly done root canals sometimes tale months to heal, especially if they were difficult or highly infected.

Unseen pathology: Sometimes a canal is missed, but can be found perhaps with a 3d cone beam x-ray. Any other pathology may show up. Find a dentist with the right technology.

Possible crack: It can take up to 6 months for a tooth to completely heal from having a root canal. Depending on your level of discomfort i'd see the dentist or specialist that did your root canal. It is possible your tooth had a fracture line that extended into the nerve prior to having any work done. If that was the case it didn't matter what work you had done, the tooth had a hopeless prognosis. Good luck!
