You are right: You need to actually work hard sometimes to turn that brain off and medications are not the answer. Medications will put your brain into sleep but it does not turn off the thoughts so often deep sleep still doesn't occur. Cognitive behavioral therpay can be very helpful as can improving your sleep routine. Check out national sleep foundation behavior recommendations.
