Fractured Root?: There are multiple reasons why you may still be in pain. Some include: antibiotic taken incorrectly, wrong antibiotic for the infection, fractured tooth root, gum infection, even cancer (although the last option is extremely unlikely). The bottom line is, see your dentist immediately. No infection should last 5-weeks on the proper antibiotic. As a rule, your mouth should never hurt.

Too long: Antibiotics should have some reduction of infection within first 3 days otherwise change antibiotics. Infection lasting 5 weeks in spite of antibiotics could be in need of an extraction, drainage of infection, sinus infected, fractured tooth causing pain.
