Different Opinion : Being a dpm all we treat is foot and ankle conditions. Orthopedic surgeons if done a foot and ankle fellowship are equally as good. Do what you feel most comfortable with and make sure they are board certified.

Ankle issues: There are podiatrists and orthopedists who do not like to treat ankles and there are both who actually specialize in ankles. Call their offices and ask about their residency training and if they see a lot of ankle injuries. Also, check with the local hospital referral servicves or with your primary care physician for a referral.

Ankle Surgeon: A dpm can be called a foot and ankle surgeon due to training and certification and an orthopedic surgeon can be called a foot and ankle surgeon by training and certification. All individuals can vary within a profession, due to your medical history and procedure history, i'd recommend going to a university based practice and ask for their top foot and ankle surgeon (who the nurse would go to).

Orthopedic surgeon: Any joint, bone, muscle or ligament injury is best treated by an orthopedic surgeon. Our training is much more extensive and our credentialing more rigorous than DPM training.
