My son is hospitalized with acute pancreatitis, for the fourth time. what can he do to prevent this from happening again? he also has diabetes.

Rule out CF: There are many causes of pancreatitis including gall bladder stone, chronic alcohol consumption and certain medications. You did not state your son's age but if young and non of the above applies, then he may need to be screened for cystic fibrosis. He may also have high triglycerides which can also cause pancreatitis at high levels. Imaging of the abdomen and eval by a GI specialist will help.

Tough problem: Tough problem. Diabetes is a risk factor for pancreatitis. Other risk factors include obesity, high trigycerides, the use of ace inhibitors and some diuretics and alcohol use. Gallblader disease can also predispose one to pancreatitis as can trauma and a family history. See a GI specialist if you can for a comprehensive workup.
