Should be....: As long as you are not allergic to clindamycin. I'd imagine that this recommendation is based on some heart or joint replacement issues. The doctor is probably making sure that there is no collateral damage to your heart or artificial joints.

Clindamycin safety: Clindamycin is i assume being taken for pre-medication prior to dental treatment. If you have tolerated this drug before, it is fine and safe to take before your root canal.
