Ileum is part of the small intestine. It connects the small bowel to the colon. A mass inside that bowel will require surgery to remove. Prognosis depends on what kind of growth it is and where it is in the bowel wall.

Specializes in General Surgery

The ileum is what we call the second half of the small bowel- cancer here is rare and unfortunately aggressive. Typically treated with resection and chemotherapy depending on lymph node status and the presence of disease at distant sites (metastasis). Best treated at a cancer center with accreditation by the american college of surgery and/ or the national cancer institute.
