Can my local primary care doctor treat blocked arteries?

Blocked arteries: Usually not. Depends on where the block is located.

Possibly: If your blocked arteries are only mild, they can be managed medically if your physician is comfortable with this. This does depend on which arteries are involved. For leg arteries, intervention is only needed if the blockage is severe, or if medical management does not help enough and the symptoms are interfering with your daily activities.

No: The treatment for a blocked artery varies depending upon the location and the functional significance of the artery. Some can be opened interventionally and others can be bypassed. In other instances the occluded artery is treated conservatively. A vascular surgeon can help you with this.
