Call dentist: Sounds like you have an abscess. Can't tell if it is related to your gums or your tooth, over the internet, without a radiograph.

See a dentist: Swelling and pain indicate an infection. It will take a dental exam to determine if it is the tooth or the gums. Keep the area as clean as you can, rinse with warm salt water, and take OTC pain reliever until you can get to the dentist.

Simple solution: See a dentist for examination x-rays and treatment. Dental and gums problems are never any fun, but the good news is that most of them can be easily prevented.
