Neck pain: If the trapezius muscle is not tightening up, and there is associated neck pain and sometimes tension around the upper shoulder blade, there might be nerve impingement in the neck. This can give rise to weakness and a sense of swelling. Best would be to have yourself carefully examined by an orthopaedic spine doc and perhaps obtain an MRI to find the source of your problems... Proximal muscles: Are you having pain lifting your arms above your shoulders... Any stiffness. See your physician as it could strictly be orthopedic in nature but could also be rheumatological.
