No gain unless pain: Foot surgery always involves some sort of recuperation, and longer healing; since we obviously walk on our feet. I always tell my patients to let their level of pain be their guide.

No treatment now: Hallux rigidus is a stiff big toe. If it is not causing pain, i would not recommend any treatment. It may eventually start causing pain, and then treatment may be required. Treatment could involve shoe orthotic devices, anti-inflammatory pain medicines, and even surgery.

Eventually: You will likely need treatment in form of surgery. If its ok now don't worry when it hurts is time to seek treatment.
