Dark circles: These are called allergic shiners and are causes by blood congestion under the skin from chronic nasal congestion from allergies. Allergies and asthma coexist and treating one helps the other. See an allergist that can manage both of his problems. Treating the nasal congestion will alleviate the darkness under the eyes.

Nasal congestion: Unless it is hereditary or your son has not slept for days, the dark circles under the eyes are more likely related to nasal congestion due to hay fever. Hay fever (allergic rhinitis) is present in likely >70% of people with asthma. The more nasal congestion, the darker the circle. Be sure he is using a controller drug for his asthma and not relying on albuterol alone.

Allergy: Dark circle around eyes caused by allergy, not from use of inhalers. Asthma patients also has allergies. With control of allergy, reduction of exposure to allergens, asthma attack lessens. 2 medications for asthma: #1 rescue med: reduce airway spasms, e.g. Albuterol and alike; #2 controller med: reduce overall inflammation, prevent new attack, e.g. Steroids. Nasal steroid helps nasal allergy etc.
