Antiviral medication: The most commonly utilized medications for shingles are antiviral medications, such as Acyclovir (zovirax), Famciclovir (famvir), and valacyclovir (valtrex). Other medications that can help with symptoms are oral steroids (i.e. Prednisone) as well as pain medications.

Shingles: Suggests recurrence of latent "chicken pox" virus. Usually antiviral medications are used acutely as well as Prednisone to help prevent the possibility of post herpetic nerve pain which can be debilitating and life lasting. Also nerve pain medications such as gabapentin, pregabilin, or Amitriptyline can be helpful.
