It depends: A low risk patient with chest pain could have many possibilities for a diagnosis, so the decision of testing depends on what the most likely causes are for that particular patient. If it's suspicious for a pulmonary embolus, then a test is absolutely necessary. On the other hand, if it sounds like acid reflux causing the pain then a test isn't necessary.
