Pain: Your doctor should provide suggestions on that as well. He may choose to give you a pain killer prior to that (called premedication). The choice should be his since he knows you better.

Postoperative pain: Usually pain is relieved when packing is removed. There is some discomfort associated with the removal of packing, but it is typically not too bad. Some patients will take one of their pain pills prior to packing removal, though.
