Ana+sed. Rate: There is no cause of concern for hct&mpv because they are normal at sea level. Border line low, from your lab reference for high altitude or chronic inflammation.Should be concerned about ana+ titer & sed. Rate high. Possible one of many connective tisue diseases. You have to see rheumatologist for dsdna, complement, crp, other antibodies. Minor change in CBC may be because of it. Good luck.

A 54-year-old member asked:

I have an ANA that goes from 1.1 or below up to 1.3. Does a fluctuating result like this mean I don't really have lupus?

Not really: ANA results are given as titers. A titer of less than 1:40 is considered normal. Many people in the general population will have low titers of ANA (1:1 or 1:2) and will not have an autoimmune disease. 95% of people with lupus will have an elevated ANA test. If your ANA test is negative or low; your chance of having lupus is less than 5% (but not zero). A diagnosis of lupus requires other tests.
A 38-year-old member asked:

How is the lupus panel more helpful than just checking ana?

Non specific: An ANA can certainly and most likely positive in lupus. However, it can be seen in many rheumatic diseases and other illnesses. Anas can be seen in normal people also. However more specific tesing can be more helpful and more specifc for lupus. They include a sm or smith antibody which is specific for lupus. A high dsdna and low C3 and C4 are again good tests for lupus. Other tests exist also.
A 29-year-old member asked:

What does a positive result on the ANA titer mean?

Further testing: A positive ANA may not be significant. First of all why was the test done. If it was done for joint pain it will mean more then if a physiciab did one as a part of an annual physicial. Certainly, we are may be more concerned based on the value but also the pattern of the ana. The titer may mean an autoimmune disease is present based on the complaints, physical exam, and the values of other tests.
