Surgery or nothing: Recession is not ideal, but can occur due to poor brushing technique, use of medium or hard toothbrushes, genetically inadequate gum, trauma, etc. Surgery can be performed to try to restore the lost gum and cover the root, but may only be able to regain 50% of what has been lost. If the recession is minimal, 2mm or less, surgery would usually be considered optional.

Keep it clean: Keep the tooth as clean as possible, as with all your other teeth. Do not put a lot of pressure on the toothbrush while brushing to not scrub away the tissue. Also discuss this question with your dentist as he is most familiar with your mouth.

Dental exam: First you need to find out the cause of your recession. Some of the causes can be from periodontal disease, bad bite, grinding, habits, brushing too hard. Once you have an exam and find the reason for the recession you can treat it if necessary. Sometimes this is not treated at an initial stage and prevention is the key.
