Just took my child to the doctor who diagnosed low calcium. what is that? i need to tell the teacher.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Hypocalcemia.: Hypocalcemia is low serum calcium (less than 9 mg/dl). This can have many causes, like hypoparathyroidism, and renal failure. This usually has symptoms (muscle spasms) and abnormal readings like high phosphate. In children, it is likely from vitamin d dependent ricketts type i or ii. Intesinal malabsorptoin can also cause it. Treatment is Calcium Chloride or gluconate, and Calcitriol (vit d).
