No: Nerve pain can happen to diabetics without any need for amputation. Often the nerve pain, also called neuralgia, can be treated with oral medications - like Neurontin or lyrica (pregabalin). See your family doctor to discuss more.

No: But if the diabetic pain is associated with decreased foot sensation it is important to take precautions so an amputation does not happen. Protecting the feet is crucial. Always using shoes (even inside the house), checking the feet everyday and early treatment of any foot issues is the best way to prevent any problems that may eventually result in amputation.

Pain management: Strict control of blood sugar is crucial as it may help with the pain associated with diabetic neuropathy. Periodic check ups with your physician and advice and possible medical management for the management of neuropathic pain may be helpful.
