Depends: Rapid acting insulins such a humalog/novolog should be taken 15 minutes or less before food. Regular insulin, which hopefully not many people are still using, should be taken about 30 minutes before food. Basal Insulin such as Lantus (insulin glargine) should be taken at the same time of day each day, but has no relationship to food.
