Blood in the eye: Blood on the eye surface, subconjunctival hemorrhage, may be caused by sneezing, coughing, straining, and rubbing the eye. It usually resolves in 2 to 4 weeks. Blood inside the eye may be due to trauma, diabetes, surgery, lupus, ocular melanoma, etc. If you are concerned about your eye, consult your local ophthalmologist.

Be careful.: Most frequently blood in the white of the eye is due to coughing, sneezing or straining. If you are on a blood thinner, it is easier to have this happen. You should also check for hypertension, diabetes or trauma to the eye as less frequent causes. Your family doctor can do easy tests for these problems. Even less frequently we find anemia or leukemia as causing this problem.
