A member asked:

Are chloramphenicol eye drops as effective as the eye ointment at preventing infection?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Best avoided: Chloramphenicol eyedrops are a highly effective antibiotic although in the usa because of the rare risk of reaction, they have all but been abandoned. They are available in other countries. There are terrific eyedrops currently available. Antibiotic drops should only be used to combat an active infection. They should not be used to prevent the possibility of infection.
