Why can't i bite down hard while the orthodontist puts on metal bands on my molars?

Placing bands: The right amount of pressure needs to be used when placing bands on the molars. Too much pressure can push the band into the wrong position on your tooth or cause pressure on your gums.

Distortion: As the orthodontist fits bands around your molars, if you bite down hard before the band is properly positioned it can distort the band.

The eggshell effect: When bands are placed on the teeth, they can be directly affected by your bite considering the amount of force you can generate when you bite together. The orthodontist is worried about the band being broken, dislodged, or pushed into the gum and they make the recommendation to protect you.

Position/strength: It could be your molars line up poorly and you cannot physically bring opposing teeth together well enough. It may be your dr. Is asking you to bite lightly. I very often see patients with weak muscles of mastication (biting) and they cannot summon the strength. There are several ways and alternatives for your orthodontist to deal with this issue. Good luck!

They may bend.: If you bite down too hard or too fast the metal band could bend or hurt the gums.

Discuss with ortho: Biting down hard may distort the bands. But without seeing your case it is best to discuss your concerns with your orthodontist.
