Use insect repellent: Wear insect repellent when you are outside, especially in the evening.

Mosquito bites: Store aloe vera gel in refrigerator & apply to affected area. Rub basil leaf on bite. It repels mosquitoes & has anti-inflammatory effect. Consider applying calamine lotion or crushed ice or a cold pack. A 1 to 1 mix of water & baking soda is effective when applied to lesions. You can take oral medications like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or Chlorpheniramine for itching.

A 18-year-old member asked:

I have this half of dime sized "black mark" on my leg. I think it was caused by a mosquito bite. Its been a year already .What can I do?

See doctor: A black mark may represent an abnormal growth which requires a biopsy. A mosquito bite can leave a scar like lesion called a dematofibroma but they are not black. Do not delay seeing a doctor because it is best to deal with possible abnormal pigmented lesions early.

Antihistamine: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is good but may make you sleep. For the discomfort many people use teabags topically (wet of course) teabags also are good for the pain of sunburn.

A 16-year-old male asked:

I have a mosquito bite on my leg and it looked normal and now it's larger and red with some purple dots (doesn't look normal). Is it infected?

That's possible: If it gets worse instead of better - more red, warm or tender, then it could be infected. You should see your doctor.

A 29-year-old female asked:

I have about 7 mosquito bites. One on my leg is bright red and quarter size. It's not swollen just red?

Relax: Mosquito bites are red and itchy. Hydrocortisone cream will help. More potent, prescription steroid creams are more effective. You can also rub with a wet (not coated!) aspirin. Antihistamine may help: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a sleeping pill. Claratin, Allegra, Zyrtec are preferred with little or no sedation. Generics are equivalent and cheaper.
