Isn't about cysts: While the name can fool you, the criteria for diagnosing pcos is 1) amenorrhea or missed periods; and 2) excess/unwanted hair or hirsuitism. An ultrasound is definitely not required to diagnose pcos. They haven't changed the name of the condition, but it's an older idea that women with pcos need their ovaries measured. More important are their glucose and cholesterol levels.

Misconception: The term pcos is misleading, women with pcos don't have cyst on their ovaries but they have an increase number of follicles/eggs that are arrested in an early stage of development. Cysts on the ovaries can be due to other conditions such as functional cyst in the reproductive years , endometriosis, hemorrhagic cyst etc..Definition of pco ovaries is the presence of 12 or more follicles < 10 mm.
