A 73-year-old male asked:

second round of synvisc (hylan g-f 20) one injections produced a prolonged inflammatory reaction. is it likely that orthovisc will produce a similar reaction?

Most likely: The active ingredient is the same but the preservatives may b different. It depends on what caused the problem, the hyaluronic component or the preservatives. Is a roll of the dice. U may have a greater reaction next go round.
Dr. Ronald Krauser

It has nothing to do with preservatives. Synvisc contains a foreign protein (rooster comb) while Orthovisc does not.

No: Synvisc (hylan g-f 20) contains a foreign protein (rooster comb) while orthovisc does not. Orthovisc will not cause the same reaction.
