Many uses: Lorazepam (brand name ativan) is a benzodiazepine tranquilizer, used to decrease anxiety. It is also commonly used before medical procedures to help the patient relax, for some tremors, and is sometimes used as a sleeping pill (although there are better options). Dosage varies depending on the use: simple anxiety responds well to 0.5 mg while pre-medication for a procedure may be 2 mg.
