Many possiblilites: If it's tender, it could be a dental abcess or a swollen lymph node from an infection. If it's not tender, it could be a cyst. The only way to know what it is for sure is to have your dr check it out.

Several causes: You describe an area that has several major structures in the vacinity. A large salivary gland in that area will sometimes become suddenly swollen. There are lymph ndes that can react and swell. Sometimes cysts can be present in that region and will form a "lump". You should have any abnormal growth evaluated.
