A member asked:

I'm just wondering, if you ask your orthodontist to remove your braces, will they do it?

Removing ortho: Orthodontists get this question often, either with non-compliant patients or patients who are moving or need their braces removed for other reasons (acting). If you are requesting them to be removed, they will most likely have you sign a form acknowledging that you are interrupting treatment and therefore, will not achieve the results you initially requested at the start of treatment.

For what reason ?: Orthodontists usually remove braces when treatment objectives have been achieved. Ending your treatment prematurely would not be advised. Ultimately, this is between you and your orthodontist.

Depends: It depends on how far along you are in treatment and if the goals of treatment have been achieved. Discuss this with your dentist if you have any concerns about continuing orthodontic treatment.

Maybe: If you have met the financial responsibility and your treatmemt is not at a critcal stage and for some reason you would like to terminate your treatment than your orthodontist could ( for a fee) take records, have you sign a waiver and an informed consent to remove your braces. It's best to discuss your concerns with your orthodontist since they have your best interest in mind.

It's your option: You can have your braces removed at any time you want. If your orthodontist doesn't feel that he has accomplished all his treatment objectives, he will probably have you sign a form stating that you have elected to terminate your treatment before it was completed.

Yes, but why?: How much time, effort, and cost have you put into resolving your malocclusion to this point? It's your body, you have final say, but quitting mid-treatment is exceptionally unwise. Expect to sign a release listing all of the possible consequences of discontinuing treatment. Please, before you do this, ask your Orthodontic Specialist to set aside time to talk with you about your concerns.
