I'm getting braces and my orthodontist said that he wants to remove my bottom canine teeth. is that normal?

Unusual: As canines are the longest rooted teeth in the mouth orthodontic specialists utilize their distinct anatomy for anchorage and stabilization. If extractions are required it's usually premolars that are removed. If the canines are compromised, however, their removal may be prudent. Please discuss this with both your family dentist and your orthodontist.

Questionable: To date, I have never seen lower cuspids removed for orthodontic purposes. They are some of the longest rooted, strongest ; most important teeth to maintain in the mouth! they are essential for a balanced bite ; often become strategic teeth to support prosthesis late on in life. That is not to say you might you might have special circumstances requiring that. I would at least get a second opinion.

Can be: Extracting teeth as part of orthodontic treatment is not unusual. If you have excessive crowding, and there is no other way to address this (expansion, slenderizing, proclining are all methods used), then yes, extraction may be required.

Braces: Are you sure you did not misunderstand? I am not an orthodontist. That being said, I have never heard of removing the canine teeth. If teeth need to be extracted it is usually the teeth behind the canine teeth. However, excessive crowding or other problems will dictate treatment.
