Rectal mucus: Inflamed hemorrhoids can cause bleeding and pain. Rectal irritation associated with hemorrhoids may cause increase in mucus production as it tries to compensate for the inflammation. I would address it with your doc if you've not done it yet. He may choose to drop a small scope in the office to look inside of your rectum to rule out other possible causes.

Pain: Mucus passing may indicate an infection and should not be dismissed. I would suggest a visit to your primary care physician or emergency room to evaluate the form of infection involving your colon.
