Severe ankle sprain: After a sprain, there can be one or several ligaments that are torn. Each ligament must heal and this can take months to a year for complete healing. Chronic or subsequent sprains can continue to wear ligament tissue down to weak scar tissue and instability can occur. You may need physical therapy to improve stability at this time. Complete tear.: You may have sustained a compete tear of the ligaments that help maintain the stability of your ankle.Sometime the ligaments have healed and it is just that you need to strengthen the ankle muscles that provide the dynamic stability of the ankle.See an orthopedist , get evaluated. This may entail getting an MRI and or ligament stress test. Pt often helps , and surgery for those who dont get better.
