Where on your foot?: Where on your foot is the pain? Although xrays are great at finding fractures or joint damage, this may be soft tissue injury. An MRI is great at findings soft tissue injury but in the foot an MRI needs to be "sliced" at the correct thickness. There are many radiologist that get slices at 0.2-0.3 mm thickness to find small ligament damage (plantar plate ligament, lisfranc, etc).

Musculoskeletal: Ultrasound by a skilled physical medicine practitioner can often help discern pain issues relating to ligamentous damage that would be invisible to regular x-rays.
