Yes, it is possible: 25% of lateral meniscus tears are missed on mri. It is the job of your treating orthopedic surgeon to correlate MRI findings with your symptoms. Sometimes surgery is recommended despite relatively negative MRI findings. On the other hand, your symptoms may have nothing to do with your meniscus. Popping and buckling are not specific to meniscus problems.
