A member asked:

Can a pediatrician prescribe antidepressants?

9 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Some do, some don't: Many pediatricians are very comfortable evaluating for and managing mild, uncomplicated depression. Some of us have had additional training in this area through ongoing education and have special interest in psychological issues and behavioral problems of childhood, including depression. Other pediatricians have not kept up on this specific area of their knowledge, and refer. Just ask your ped!

Yes: As long as it is to treat a kid. However, most pediatricians who are managing a child with depression or mood disorders refer them to the pediatric psychiatrist if available.
