A member asked:

If depression is caused by an inflammation on the brain, why can't we detected it with an mri?

The presumption: That most depression is caused by brain inflammation has no basis in medical knowledge. The diagnosis of depression is based on clinical criteria and brain MRI is most often normal in patients with that diagnosis.

Inflammation & Dep.: There is some evidence -- based on medical knowledge -- that inflammation has a role in developing depression. Many of the cytokines involved have effects pathways related to mood. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23636913 still, not all inflammatory processes can be seen on mri, which detects anatomical (not functional) abnormalities. Ms can't be "seen" on MRI until it damages white matter.
