A member asked:

Do anti-depressants actually help long term? or do they simply treat the symptoms and not the cause?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Antidepressants: Anti-depressants are not just band-aids. Ssris/snris have been shown not only to help the brain function more normally, but also to increase the size of the hippocampus (the part of the brain most sensitive/damaged by the "stress" of depression). Lithium (an augmenting agent) has been shown to decrease neurodegeneration in the brain, which occurs in everyone, esp people with depression.
