Severity of sprain: Depends on the severity and your body's response with swelling. Mild sprains may hurt, but the pain can usually be controlled quickly with icing, compression wraps, rest, antiinflammatory meds and bracing. More severe sprains can have lots of swelling and may need longer for pain to decrease. Generally a severe sprain will have a feeling of instability or unsteadyness with ambulation.
