Ankle sprain: Residual symptoms can be due to persistent instability due to loose ligaments, or could be a residual inflammatory issue. Other possibilities include cartilage injury or an osteochondral injury. Go see your doctor for further evaluation and recommendations.

Depends: Sometimes with severe sprains you can bruise the cartilage of the talus on your ankle joint or you may have some residual ankle instabiity. Would really require formal evaluation to better determine nature of residual pain.
