Further evaluation: Sometimes ankle sprains can be more than just sprains. There is sometimes an injury called an osteochondral lesion. This is not usually visualized on x-ray. This would require an MRI or a ct scan to visualize the area on the surface of the ankle joint. This injury requires further evaluation.

Get re-evaluated: If there was a severe sprain weeks back, it is a soft tissue injury. But you may have had an undetected bone/joint injury as well. The instability created by that kind of injury will cause a change in gait which can also affect the leg. You need to get rechecked. Options for treatment may include conservative means such as bracing or if the injury is severe, surgery may be warranted.
