Many choices: Anesthesia is a broad category so i will give an overview. Topical includes any liquid or solid which helps to alleviate pain and are placed on the gums. Injectables are just as you imagined and involve needles. Some dentists even work on folks who are under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Some others feel clothes pins on the ear work as well. To each his own i say.

Conscious Sedation : There is also conscious sedation. This can be done with "laughing gas" (nitrous oxide) , oral medications or intravenous medications. Although these methods are safe they should be administered by someone who has the training to use them.
