Unpredictable: Most benign tumors never turn malignant. If you have been told a tumor needs to come out, it probably needs to come out. Parotid tumors are treacherous as they can infiltrate and become much more difficult to remove without damaging your facial nerve without seeming to get bigger.

Slight chance: Of the palpable lesions of parotid, about 80% are benign and 20% malignant. Rate of transformation in the latter group not well defined but if it occurs, . Bx of tumor mass difficult to obtain in terms of adequate sampling. As such most are surgically resected for dx unless palpable nodes present. Major operation is defining landmarks of the nerve at stylomastoid foramen.
