Yes: Removal of recently placed implants, ie., less than 10 yrs old is fairly routine. Older implants which are ruptured and calcified can be an true surgical ordeal. Bleeding and hematoma are always a concern so choose someone experienced individual.

Ruptured or not?: Yes intact breast implant removal is simple but dealing with the collapsed tissue post removal is not and requires thorough discussion re options and management. If a silicone gel implant has ruptured then removal of that is much more difficult but a fully trained plastic surgeon should be able to deal with these issues for you.

Ruptured? Silicone?: Removing saline intact implants can be very simple and easily completed under local anesthesia. However removing ruptured silicone implants with extra capsular involvement of the muscles and breast tissue can be quite complex and require extensive surgery under general anesthesia. Using a preoperative MRI may be quite useful in planning surgery. The specifics will be determined at time of consult.

Not Necessarily.: Any well experienced plastic surgeon should be able to remove breast implants safely. I would not say that removal is any more difficult than initial breast augmentation surgery. However, preoperative communication is very important; patients should understand the potential downsides of removal of breast implants. Sometimes, breast lifting may be necessary. Best wishes.

Simple: The operation to remove breast implants is simple, but it is surgery and comes with all the usual surgical risks. The challenge with breast implant removal is the post operative results. Unlike breast reduction, breast implant removal does not tighten the skin, if anything support is removed with the implant. A breast lift can often lead to improved results, esp. W/ large implants & small breasts.
