Braces and TMJ: The simple answer is yes, or it could. However, many times the TMJ problems (tmd) can be resolved with braces. One reason people suffer from TMJ is because the occlusion (how the teeth come together) is not correct. If the teeth are moved with out treating the TMJ first , you could make things worse. The orthodontist or dentist will not do that on purpose i suggest treating the tmj/tmd then braces.

Maybe: There are tricks the dentist can do to help reduce if not eliminate this risk. Besides the ends may justify the means.

It shouldn't: But your orthodontist should check for TMJ problems before treatment, monitor it during treatment and recheck it near the end of treatment. If properly done, orthodontic treatment is more likely to eliminate or prevent rather than create TMJ problems. Discuss this issue prior to beginning treatment.

False statement : We all trying to practice evidence-based medicine. Here is one example. Luther F, Layton S, McDonald F Summary from a review done in July 2010: “We do not know the real cause of TMD at present”. “There is no evidence from trials to show that active orthodontic treatment can prevent or relieve temporomandibular disorders”. Hope it helps.

Opposite: Clinical experience has shown us lessening of TMJ symptoms in about 90% of our patients, 7% show no difference, and only 3% have worsening of symptoms. In other words, expect to feel better after treatment by a qualified Orthodontic Specialist.
