Custom Guard: Look for a dentist who has training in bite equilibration. Pankey is a well respected school. These dentists will know how to make you a bite guard to wear at night and help your TMJ situation. A physical exam is needed to determine your needs. Surgery may also be recommended.

Start with a Splint: If you are having TMJ symptoms, then you are having inflamation in your jaw joint that is creating the pain. To decrease these symptoms, normally we would recommend that you see a dentist that understands and treats TMJ symptoms. A comprehensive exam and evaluation should be performed and generally the first line of treatment is anti-inflamatory medications and a custom mouth splint.
