Viral : Cold sores that occur on your lips are caused by a herpes simplex virus; it's usually type 2; type 1 can also cause sores on the mouth but are primarily genital. Stress and illnesses can precipitate an outbreak as can sun exposure. Antivirals like Acyclovir and Famvir (famciclovir) are not as useful for hsv 1 as they are for type 2 but are worth a try; start at the first symptoms (tingling prior to outbreak).
