Depends on Stage: Cold sores occur in three main stages: prodromal, blistering, and healing. The prodromal stage is the only stage where they can really be "treated"--this is when the area where the cold sores will arise becomes tingly and/or itchy. Application of an anti-viral ointment (like zovirax) may prevent or lessen the outbreak. Once the area blisters, it is too late--just keep it moist until it heals.
